Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies

In 1972, the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) was founded as a Federation of member organizations for the exchange of ideas at the forefront of analytical sciences. The objective of FACSS is to provide an international forum in which representatives of academic, industrial, and government institutions, from diverse scientific disciplines, can participate and cooperate in an effort to confront the challenges of complex analytical problems and share their knowledge.

The Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS) is a non-profit organization which is tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the United States IRS tax code.

The LRP is a long-standing committee that is designed to discuss issues that affect FACSS and the SciX conference.

FACSS brings together fourteen diverse member organizations from around the world. As a volunteer-based organization that supports analytical chemists and spectroscopists, our core tenet is that we are all stronger together.

We put that tenet into practice in the form of an annual conference, where attendees from around the world gather for a robust exchange of scientific ideas. Looking back on our nearly 50 year history, we have found that while we may be best known for organizing a conference, we have in additional built a community. A home where people have made lifelong friends. A professional family where ideas can grow and thrive. In our organization as well as our conference, SciX, we strive to reflect the best of society in our kindness, our curiosity, our empathy, our scientific abilities, and our inclusivity. We have many things to be proud of, for we have built something unique and special.

The recent events surrounding George Floyd's death have reignited a conversation about race, inclusivity, social norms, and diversity around the world. As a community, FACSS does not tolerate racism nor any other form of discrimination. FACSS has already taken important first steps to formalize its position against discrimination and harassment. Our code of conduct, adopted in 2019, asserts that we do not tolerate discrimination or harassment, and it affirms our belief that all people should be treated fairly and with kindness. We realize that we can do more to engender inclusivity and diversity. The community forum will help us understand your needs and how we can address gaps.

We also invite you to consider volunteering for FACSS and to be a part of the change that you want to see. And, we call upon our entire community to join us as we stand against racism.

Sincerely,

The Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies Executive Committee
